Just a few minutes down the 10 freeway from West Covina sits El Monte, a city with deep roots in the San Gabriel Valley and a community heart that is easy to feel the moment you arrive. I have worked with families, seniors, and first-time buyers here for many years, and I love that El Monte blends its proud agricultural history with a forward-looking spirit. From Thursday evening farmers markets to one of the largest county parks in the region, there is a lot to love about calling this city home.

Thursday Nights on Main Street

If there is one thing I tell everyone to try first, it is the El Monte Farmers Market. Held on Main Street between Tyler Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue, it runs Thursday evenings from about 5 to 9 p.m. through the warmer months, roughly spring through October. The city started it back in 2014 as part of its Urban Agriculture Initiative, and it celebrates El Monte's farming roots beautifully. You will find fresh local produce, prepared food, and handmade goods, all set to live music through the popular "Music on Main" series. It is the kind of evening where neighbors run into neighbors and kids dance by the bandstand. I honestly think it is one of the best ways to feel the real character of this community.

A Park That Feels Like a World of Its Own

El Monte sits right next to the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, a sprawling 1,492-acre Los Angeles County park that borders the city. It is one of the largest recreation areas in the county, with open space, walking and bike trails, and fishing. For nature lovers, the Whittier Narrows Natural Area and Nature Center is a quiet gem where more than 300 species of birds have been observed. It is the perfect place for a slow Saturday walk, a picnic, or just a moment of peace without leaving the valley.

Inside the city itself, El Monte's Parks and Recreation department keeps things active for every age. The Jack Crippen Multipurpose Senior Center is a warm gathering place for older residents, the Aquatic Center offers swimming and lessons for the whole family, and the Grace T. Black Auditorium hosts community performances and gatherings throughout the year.

Schools That Help Young People Thrive

For families, El Monte's schools are a real strength. The El Monte City School District serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade across 14 schools and is known for its award-winning music program, including a choir's beloved "Big Sing" season. The El Monte Union High School District is one of the oldest in the San Gabriel Valley, dating back to 1901, and serves high schoolers at schools including El Monte, Arroyo, Mountain View, Rosemead, South El Monte, and Fernando R. Ledesma. It offers dual-enrollment and Advanced Placement programs that let students earn college credit before they graduate. For continuing education, Rio Hondo Community College serves the area close by.

Neighbors Who Look Out for One Another

What really sets El Monte apart is the network of caring organizations that support the community. The Boys & Girls Club of the San Gabriel Valley helps young people reach their full potential, and the Our Saviour Center runs a food pantry, emergency shelter, and youth development programs and was even named a California Nonprofit of the Year. The San Gabriel Valley Family Center and Catholic Charities offer food and support to families in need, while ActiveSGV works on clean transportation and getting young people outdoors. Groups like the El Monte Women's Club and La Casa Community Center round out a community that genuinely looks out for its own.

Why El Monte?

El Monte gives you the best of the San Gabriel Valley all in one place: a proud history, a lively farmers market, one of the region's great parks right next door, good schools, and a community that cares for its neighbors. Add easy access to the 10 and 60 freeways, and you can see why so many people are proud to call it home.

Whether you are a young family looking for a welcoming neighborhood, a senior seeking a supportive community, or an investor watching the area's potential, El Monte has a lot to offer. I have been helping people find their place in El Monte and across the San Gabriel Valley for over 35 years, and I know these neighborhoods inside and out.
