Claremont: City of Trees, Village Charm, and College-Town Life
If you have driven east on the 210 toward the foothills, you have probably noticed Claremont rising at the far end of the San Gabriel Valley, and maybe you wondered about it. They call Claremont the City of Trees and PhDs, and one visit to its Village or a quiet hour on its trails will show you why. Families, seniors, and first-time buyers all find something to love here, so let me share what makes this college town such a special place to call home.
A Village Made for Strolling
The heart of Claremont is its historic Village, a walkable downtown of roughly twelve blocks around Yale Avenue. Instead of a strip mall, you get a European-style town center with more than 150 shops, restaurants, bakeries, and galleries tucked beneath mature trees. The restored Claremont Packing House at 532 West First Street is a favorite stop, with dining, shops, and wine tasting under one roof. My advice is to park once, leave the car, and let the afternoon unfold on foot. That is the Claremont way.
The Sunday Farmers Market
Every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, the Claremont Farmers & Artisans Market fills Harvard Avenue between First Street and Bonita Avenue. It has run since 1996 and is one of the largest certified farmers markets in eastern Los Angeles County, operated by the nonprofit Claremont Forum. Local growers, handmade goods, live music, and neighbors catching up over coffee. It is the kind of weekly ritual that makes a town feel like a community.
Parks, Gardens, and Trails
Outdoor life in Claremont is hard to beat. Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, about 2,000 acres at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, offers more than 20 miles of trails, including the popular 5-mile loop with sweeping foothill views. The California Botanic Garden, formerly the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, showcases native California plants and hosts lovely fall evening programs in mid-October. The Thompson Creek Trail gives walkers, runners, cyclists, and leashed dogs about 2.8 miles of paved path, and Memorial Park anchors the town with the historic Garner House, an amphitheater, sports fields, and playgrounds.
A School District That Delivers
Families are served by the Claremont Unified School District, which educates about 7,100 students across its campuses. Seven elementary schools, including Chaparral, Condit, Mountain View, Oakmont, Sumner, Sycamore, and Vista Del Valle, feed into El Roble Intermediate and then Claremont High School. That kind of choice is a real advantage for a community this size.
Seven Colleges, One College Town
The Claremont Colleges set this city apart. Pomona, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Pitzer form the undergraduate core, joined by Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute, and together they fill the town with lectures, concerts, and performances everyone can enjoy. With roughly 24,000 trees on public land and more than four in ten residents holding an advanced degree, Claremont earned its nickname and a nod from Sunset as the Best Suburb in the West.
Fall in Full Color
October is a lovely month to visit. The Village Venture Arts & Crafts Festival, now in its 44th year, returns to downtown on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with more than 400 artisan booths, a children's costume parade, and live music. It is a true San Gabriel Valley tradition and a wonderful way to meet the community. The Village also sits steps from the Metrolink station, so a day trip to Los Angeles is easy without fighting traffic.
Real Support for Seniors
For seniors, Claremont offers genuine care and connection. The Joslyn Center at 660 North Mountain Avenue is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for residents 55 and older, with hot lunches, classes, day trips, wellness activities, and even help with tax preparation. It is the kind of resource that brings families peace of mind when a parent is weighing their next chapter.
Why Claremont?
Whether you are a young family drawn by the schools, a first-time buyer looking for walkability and charm, or a senior seeking a community that will hold your hand through a transition, Claremont deserves a serious look. It sits at the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley with easy freeway access, right next to Pomona, La Verne, and San Dimas, keeping small-town living close while the whole region stays within reach.
I have spent more than 35 years helping families and seniors make confident moves across the San Gabriel Valley, and I would love to help you understand Claremont too.
